Columbus, Ohio Salary History Ban: Effective March 1, 2024

Written by The Berkshire Compensation Team | March 7 2024

Effective on March 1st, 2024, the City of Columbus in Ohio enacted a ban related to employers inquiring into an applicant’s salary history. This applies to all employers with 15 or more employees inside the city limits of Columbus. Violating the ordinance could lead to civil fines of $5,000 per violation.

A similar ban proposed in the Ohio legislature failed to get out of committee; therefore, a number of cities in Ohio have banned the practice including Cincinnati (March, 2020), Toledo, (June, 2020), and now Columbus.
