Secretary of DOL Marty Walsh Resigns: from U.S Government to NHLPA

Written by Carla Spriggs | February 25 2023

U.S. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh has announced his resignation. After much anticipation, for well over a week, both Walsh and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) confirmed, effective “mid-March”, Walsh will take the position of NHLPA Executive Director.

In Walsh’s resignation letter to President Biden, he proudly emphasized the work of the Department of Labors’ vision and efforts with his words, “We strengthened the protections that workers depend on, putting the most vulnerable workers first, lifting up the needs of women, workers of color, workers with disabilities, and veterans, and advancing the values of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility.”

President Biden issued a statement accepting Walsh’s resignation and emphasized his accomplishments. “Marty has gone to bat for working families every day, and with his help, this administration has helped workers recover from a historic economic downturn and launch a new era of worker power.”

Walsh’s undersecretary, Julie Su, will become acting U.S. Secretary of Labor and is widely believed to be the front-runner to take over the soon-to-be vacant Secretary position.

And the next chapter of the U.S. Department of Labor begins!
