Following the resignation of Marty Walsh as Secretary of the Department of Labor, President Biden yesterday confirmed his plans to nominate Julie Su as the next Secretary of the DOL.

Su, who is currently serving as Deputy Secretary, had been widely regarded as the front-runner for the position since word broke of Walsh’s resignation earlier this month.

In his statement, Biden hailed Su as a “champion for workers,” and noted her work since early in the administration, including averting a national rail shutdown and her work on the Good Jobs Initiative, which improved access to jobs free from discrimination.

Prior to joining the Biden administration, Su served as Labor Secretary for the state of California. She has 17 years of experience as a civil rights attorney and is a former MacArthur “genius” award winner.

This position must be confirmed by the Senate, where Democrats outnumber Republicans by a narrow 52-48 majority. In his Tuesday statement, Biden urged the Senate to take up the nomination quickly. Su was confirmed to her current position in a 50-47 vote in July 2021.
