On February 18th, The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) announced their launch of a modernized open data platform at data.dol.gov, marking a significant upgrade in how federal labor data is shared and analyzed. The new system centralizes datasets across the agency, improves accessibility through modern APIs, and supports advanced analytics for policymakers, researchers, and the public.

A key update for federal contractors is the inclusion of data from the VETS-4212 reporting program, which tracks the employment of protected veterans by federal contractors and subcontractors. While VETS-4212 reporting has largely flown under the radar in terms of scrutiny, by integrating this dataset into the new platform, the DOL has expanded public visibility into contractor workforce composition and compliance trends.

The DOL’s new data platform is more than a technology upgrade, it’s a transparency and enforcement tool. For federal contractors, the inclusion of VETS-4212 reporting data signals increased visibility into veteran hiring practices and a need for continued diligence in compliance and reporting accuracy.
